Welcome...

Welcome to my Website!

I built this website to document the journey that is my Masters by Research. Its main purpose is to keep all participants in my study informed and connected.

Project Title: "Please don't sue!" : Regulation, Control and Ownership in Fan (Fiction) Communities.

Thesis Abstract: With the J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. Inc. V RDR Books lawsuit as a case study, my thesis will address the concerns surrounding issues of textual authority and ownership in literary discourse, and also the affects of law, regulation and self-moderation on fan writing. The relationship between fan fiction writers and original copyright holders is tenuous at best. What are the legal and social concerns surrounding intellectual property and moral authority in modern fan publishing? How do online fan communities negotiate their enthusiasm for popular media under the threat of legal prosecution? My research questions will be grounded in an analysis of fan perceptions concerning authorial theory and copyright protection.

There is a survey available which I'd like as many people as possible to complete. Its for Fanfiction.net users over the age of 18. For a link to the survey and project information, please go to the Survey section of this website.

Most importantly: Have your say! Join the forums and share your opinion on current events in your fandom or about this research! All comments and criticism welcome!
